Most reps stop one level too early when they explain a benefit.
A feature is what the product is. A benefit is what it means for someone. In my experience, doctors weigh three levels of benefit, and reps usually mention only the first.
Take a simple feature: once daily.
- For the patient: one tablet to remember each day.
- For the practice: simpler instructions for the nurse at every review.
- For the doctor: less time re-explaining the regimen at each visit.
That last level is the one that often decides the call. A doctor's scarcest resource is time, and anything that saves it in a busy clinic matters.
One clear line: a benefit for the doctor is always professional. It is about his time and his work, never anything personal.
“Say what it means for the patient, the clinic and the doctor's day.”
