Two managers can spend the same day in the field with the same rep and get completely different results.
One gets an inspection. The other gets development.
The difference is rarely what happens in the calls. It is everything around them.
An inspection usually starts with a surprise, or a vague "I might join you this week". The manager watches for every mistake. The notes go into a file the rep never sees. And the rep learns the lesson that matters: perform on the day, then go back to normal.
Development starts with a day agreed ahead and a purpose the rep knows. The manager watches the one skill they agreed. The notes are shared with the rep the same day. And over time, something changes.
The rep starts asking you to join the hardest calls.
That is the signal I look for in my teams. Not whether the calls were perfect when I was there, but whether reps want me there at all.
A rep who fears your visit will show you a performance. Everything you coach will be based on a version of the rep that does not exist the other days of the month.
“You know you have built trust when reps ask for a field day.”
