Four words have protected more rep careers than any product training: "I will find out."
Every rep meets a question he cannot answer. A dose in renal patients. An interaction. A use outside the label. In that moment, a guess feels safer than silence. It is the opposite. One wrong answer, and the doctor starts to doubt everything else you have told him.
What I teach instead:
- Say it plainly. "I do not want to guess, Doctor. I will find out."
- Repeat the question, so the answer fits exactly what he asked.
- Route it right. Clinical and off-label questions go to medical affairs, who can answer him properly.
- Come back. Deliver it, or have it delivered, by the date you gave.
Done well, a question you could not answer becomes one of the best things that happens in the relationship. It gives you a reason to return, and it shows him you care more about being right than looking clever.
“A doctor forgives you for not knowing. He does not forgive you for guessing.”
