Asking your manager for help

The right way to escalate

Many reps ask for help too late, and in a way that is hard to act on.

I understand why. Nobody wants to look like they cannot handle their territory. So the problem waits until month-end, and then arrives as "this doctor is difficult". By then there is little anyone can do.

The difference between a weak and a strong escalation:

  • What you say.
  • Weak: "This doctor is difficult."
  • Strong: "He stopped prescribing two months ago. I tried two things. Can you join my next visit?"
  • When you ask.
  • Weak: at month-end.
  • Strong: as soon as the pattern shows.
  • What you bring.
  • Weak: only the problem.
  • Strong: the problem, what you tried and one suggestion.
  • How you ask.
  • Weak: a long message in the team group.
  • Strong: a short one-to-one call or a word face to face.

Asking early is not weakness. Hiding a problem is. And a manager who makes reps afraid to ask will only ever hear about problems when it is too late.

“Bring the problem early, with what you tried and what you suggest.”
