Integrity in the field

The lines you do not cross, ever

Some lines in this job are not about judgement. They are simply lines.

Industry codes of practice ban personal gifts to doctors, including the old exceptions for special occasions. They require promotion to be accurate, balanced and consistent with the approved label. None of this is new, yet every year someone learns it the expensive way.

The lines I expect every rep to hold:

  • No gifts. No personal gifts, cash or favours to any doctor.
  • Approved use only. Off-label questions go to medical affairs.
  • No invented claims. Every claim comes from approved material.
  • Balance. Side effects are part of the message.
  • Report safety. Any side effect you hear about goes to the safety team, on time.
  • Honest records. Record the calls you made, not the calls you planned.

The most dangerous sentence in the field is "everyone in this territory does it." It is never a defence.

“Your targets reset every year. Your name does not.”
