Medical representative interview questions
and how to answer them
The questions a pharma hiring manager asks, what each one is really testing, and how to answer with examples instead of adjectives. Written by a manager who has interviewed many candidates for rep roles.
Why well-prepared answers still fail
Ask a candidate what they would do if a doctor refused to see them and almost everyone gives the same perfect answer: build rapport, ask the nurse, bring value. It sounds right and tells the interviewer almost nothing.
Good interviewers now ask in the past tense: tell me about a time it happened. Then they keep asking what you did next and what you actually said. That is where vague answers fall apart and real ones stand out.
The questions, and good answers
- “Tell me about a time a customer said no.”Name a specific person or doctor type, what you did next and what happened in the end. Close with what you would change now. The interviewer wants to hear “I did”, not “we usually”.
- “Walk me through your results.”Give achievement against target and the actions behind it: “My territory grew. This is what I changed to get there.” Only use numbers you can explain in detail.
- “Why do you want to be a medical rep?”Talk about the work, not the car or the title: learning the science, earning a doctor’s trust over months, and owning a territory. Show you understand it is a long game.
- “A doctor asks about an unapproved use. What do you say?”That it is outside the approved use and the medical team can answer directly. Log the question and hand it to medical affairs. Never guess or share unapproved data. This answer shows integrity.
- “How would you plan your week?”Top doctors booked first, routes clustered by area and clinic hours, one half-day kept free for surprises, and a mid-week check to move what slipped rather than drop it.
- “How do you handle rejection?”Treat a no as temporary and specific, take one lesson from it, leave it in the car and walk into the next call fresh. Go back next cycle with a better question.
- “Do you have any questions for us?”Always yes. Ask what a strong first year looks like in this role. It shows you are planning to deliver, not only to be hired.
How to prepare
Three stories, ready
A no you turned around or learned from, a number you moved, and a hard promise you kept. Write each one down: situation, what you did, result, lesson.
New to pharma? Use any setting
A time you persuaded someone, recovered from a setback or hit a target. The shape of the story matters more than where it happened.
Expect a field ride
Some companies take final candidates to observe a senior rep. They watch how you treat the receptionist and the pharmacist, then ask what you would have done differently.

Questions answered
What questions are asked in a medical representative interview?+
Expect past-behaviour questions: a time a doctor or customer said no, results you achieved and how, a promise you kept, and how you handle rejection. Many interviewers also test integrity with an off-label scenario and ask how you would plan a week. Prepare real examples for each.
How do I answer “tell me about yourself” for a medical rep job?+
Keep it to a minute. Say where you come from, one result you are proud of with the action behind it, and why you want this role in this therapy area. Use examples rather than adjectives like hard-working or people person, which every candidate says.
What is a behavioural interview question?+
A question about what you actually did in the past, such as “tell me about a time a doctor stopped seeing you.” Interviewers use it because past behaviour is the best guide to future behaviour. Answer with the situation, your exact actions, the result and what you learned.
How should I answer an off-label question in an interview?+
Say you would tell the doctor the question is outside the approved use and that the medical team can answer directly. Then log the question and pass it to medical affairs. Never guess, share unapproved data or say other doctors use it that way.
What questions should I ask at the end of a medical rep interview?+
Ask what a strong first year looks like in the role, how the territory is structured and how reps are coached. Questions about delivering the job show you are planning to succeed, not only to get hired. Avoid asking only about the car, the title or the bonus.
How do I prepare for a medical rep interview with no experience?+
Prepare three real stories from study, work or volunteering: persuading someone, recovering from a setback and hitting a goal. Learn the basics of the company’s main therapy area. Practise answering in the past tense with what you did, the result and the lesson.
